Over the last 8 weeks three groups of four young people from Ashington High School have been taking part in our Social Action project. The young people have been challenged to identify a social issue within their community before developing their own social business to help the community.

Since launching the project the young people have been on an inspirational trip to Nando’s where they learnt how Nando’s as a business helps and supports the community through their chili farms in Africa. They also found out how Nando’s help their employees and what else they do in store to help the local community.

The young people also took part in an healthy eating workshop with a qualified Sports Science student where they learnt about the eat well plate and the importance of a healthy balanced lifestyle.

Over the past few weeks each group has been working with their team members in order to develop their own social business in order to help the community. One group wants to be able to teach the elderly the importance of eating healthy by offering them a healthy smoothie. The other group want to be able to help disadvantaged young people be able to have the correct equipment to take part in sports such as football. Another group want to be able to help the school community by offering a healthy snack alternative at break times for the young people and teachers.

Each group have presented their business ideas to a panel of judges in order to see if they Key will help fund their social business and each group has been successful so the young people can now go ahead with setting up their own social business in order to help the community.
