Girls Guides Ready Steady Social Action
Skills to Shine are currently running a fantastic Social Action project with the Girl Guides from Forest Hall. Through taking part in this project the Girl Guides will gain the knowledge, skills and experiences needed to address a social issue within their community. The girls will then apply their new found knowledge to develop their own social business before pitching their ideas for their business to a panel of judges in order to apply for funding towards their own social business from the Key.
By taking part in the project the girls will learn about different jobs and carers available to them as well as develop employability skills, social awareness and a can-do attitude. By the end of the project the girls will have identified a social issue whether it is Health, Community or Environment. They will then develop their own social business in order to make a positive impact to their local community.
Since launching the Social Action project with the Girl Guides we have been on many inspirational trips such as a trip to the local residential care home to meet the elderly residents and offer them a slice of cake and a cup of tea whilst talking to them and understanding what their community was like when they were younger. We have also been on a trip to the Newcastle United Foundation where the girls learnt about all the different programmes they have in place in order to help and benefit members of the community. Whilst taking part in a workshop with Newcastle United the girls also got a behind the scenes tour of St James Park.
In order for the girls to understand a real life social issue we went on a residential weekend where the girls faced a natural disaster. The girls were challenged to build their own dens/society’s which would be their main source of shelter, they also had to find a way to get fresh water to their dens whilst building a fire which would keep them warm but also allow them to cook their meals but first of all they had to prepare all of their meals themselves.
Since the residential the girls have also took part in a workshop around helping the Environment following on from the trips the girls now need to start thinking of different ideas of what social business they would like to set up and how is it going to help the community.
